New program trains kids to be fitness coaches for their peers

The Surrey Now (Sat 04 Nov 2006 Byline: Michael Booth) reports that kids are taking an active role in providing fitness training for their classmates, thanks to an innovative new program offered through the Surrey school district. The Fitkid Coaching program is the brainchild of district athletic co-ordinator Glenn Young, who came up with the plan as a means of getting large numbers of kids involved in fitness activities without straining teaching resources. Young's solution is to train a group of kids in the school to become coaches and help other students become more physically active. In total, 168 kids are now trained to be Fitkid Coaches and they in turn help their teachers with instructing and supervising fitness circuits at their schools. The Fitkid Coaches are trained to teach basic exercises to their peers involving a common set of apparatus gear -- bosu balls, extreme balance boards, resistance bands, agility ladders and reaction balls. Every elementary school in Surrey has been stocked with a supply of this fitness apparatus, further easing the implementation of the Fitkid program. The new program has been a big hit with the kids who have taken the training from Young to become Fitkid Coaches.
