1. What is World Health Day?

World Health Day is celebrated each year on April 7 by the 191 member countries of the World Health Day Organization (WHO). The WHO established this important observance to provide a forum for discussion regarding various health challenges worldwide. This year's theme is Move for Health, which focuses on the beneficial effects of physical activity.

2. What is the "activ8 the Nation's Schools World Health Day - World Record "Hokey Pokey Challenge?"

It is an opportunity for Canadian schools to celebrate World Health Day by participating in a nation-wide challenge to break the Guinness Book of World Record for the largest number of participants performing the "Hokey Pokey" at the same time.

3. When does the challenge take place?

The challenge will take place on Tuesday, April 9, 2002 at 1:15pm EST. All schools in Canada will participate simultaneously.

4. What was the previous Guinness World Record?

The existing world record was established on May 6, 1995 in Bangor, County Down, Ireland with 6748 participants.

5. Who can participate in the challenge?

Students, teachers, school staff and administration from across Canada are encouraged to participate.

6. How will organizers know the final number of participants?

All schools must pre-register to participate, including an indication of the number of students planning to participate. After the challenge, all schools must submit a post-event verification of the school's participation, including a written statement confirming the specific number of participants.

7. What do schools get for participating?

Participating schools that have completed all pre and post-registration documentation will receive a certificate of participation that recognizes their participation in World Health Day and a chance to win exciting NIKE products. All schools may receive publicity within their communities.

8. What is activ8?

activ8 is a strategy of The Foundation for Active Healthy Kids designed to provide opportunities for Canadian children and youth to be active at school, at home, and in their community.

9. Why the Hokey Pokey?

The Hokey Pokey activity was chosen because it is fun, adaptable and widely-known.

10. Can schools continue the momentum of the challenge once it is over?

Yes, in fact we strongly encourage it. Today's children and youth need to be more active. We hope that this challenge will be used as a kick-off to a week or year filled with increased opportunities to be physically active.

11. What do I have to send in after the Hokey Pokey Challenge is over?

We would request that you follow the Post Challenge Verification Statement Sample available on the CAHPERD website (www.cahperd.ca) and remember to include on School Letterhead:

 

  • Guinness's address and postal code (338 Euston Rd, London U.K. NW1 3BD)
  • Location of the record attempt
  • Confirmation of the number of participants
  • Date and time of the record attempt
  • Details of the record attempt
  • Signatures of 2 witnesses of the event
  • A list of names of all participants

 

12. Will the list of participants names be published?

No. The list of participants names will be kept strictly confidential and will not be printed or published; it is necessary solely for verification purposes.

13. When will we know if we broke the Guinness Record?

As soon as we finish processing all of the verification statements, we will be forwarding all of our information to Guinness. Once Guinness receives all submissions, the verification process should take approximately six weeks.

14. We didn't do the Hokey Pokey at the right time, should we send our information in?

Yes! We would like to include all schools that participated into day totals so we can celebrate our success together.

15. We did not get a chance to pre-register for the Hokey Pokey, but danced with the rest of the country, what should we do?

Please send in your information as well with the Post Verification Statement and class lists. To notify us of your status please make a note on the fax that you were not included in the pre-registration.

16. Our school was featured by the media and/or we took photos of the children, what should we do with those items?

Please send us any photos, newspaper clippings or media information that you would like to share with us. We would love to post them on our website! www.activehealthykids.ca
