Boat to Beijing Activity Challenge
The Daily News (Nanaimo), Tue 26 Feb 2008
Malaspina University-College has launched the Boat to Beijing Activity Challenge. The Boat to Beijing Activity Challenge is a free campus-wide event whereby individuals log kilometre equivalencies for physical activity, explains Tina McComb, co-ordinator of fitness and intramurals at Malaspina.
Anyone can participate with any kind of physical activity. For example, if you participate in a running group, swim, walk, play squash, take a fitness class or play community basketball, it all counts to the challenge.
There are about 175 participants already signed up for the activity challenge, mostly students, staff and faculty at Malaspina but community members are welcome to take part, said McComb. The goal as a group is to accumulate enough collective mileage to go from Nanaimo to Beijing, which is 8,100 kilometres by sea.
The challenge will continue throughout the spring semester with prizes drawn randomly every week as an added incentive for participants. A grand prize of a flat-screen TV will be randomly drawn at the conclusion of the event. The weekly prizes are a good incentive to encourage people to keep physically active.
There is still time for participants to sign up for the challenge. Individuals can register online at www.mala.ca/campusrec or by going to the Malaspina gymnasium. For information, call the gym office at 250-740-6418.
