N.B. students subject of 3-year study of health habits
The Canadian Press (Tue 09 Oct 2007) reports that a class of Grade 6 students in Quispamsis is the subject of a new wellness study that could bring big changes to health curriculums in New Brunswck and to the health of the general population. The Quispamsis Middle School class will begin a three-year program Wednesday that will track their physical activity, diet and sleeping habits with online software. The monitoring tool will be accompanied by classes that teach them healthy living habits they will be challenged to adopt. After plugging in their weight and height measurements, students will daily update their password-protected site with what they ate, how much exercise they did, and how many hours of sleep they got. And they will be able to track how their lifestyle changes impact their health. The program is designed to improve the health and wellness of young people in a province faced with strikingly high rates of childhood obesity. Kinek Technologies, a Saint John-based software developer, has supplied Quispamsis Middle School with its online program. Researchers will regularly monitor overall student progress and report back to the provincial government with updates.
